Arofrank, thank you for following my articles. Nice talking to you. I thought the fishes stop doing it after talking to you on the phone :)
Btw, I was about to post about "They stopped". However, they surprise me again. I guess the female only went in the morning and out by the time I came back from work. They are effficient. I guess old couples are all like that. Right ?
I totally miss count the days. The fries all formed! Lucky still manage to savage a number of them before they get snapped by the neighbours
Ok. I yak too much. Here are the pictures.
Need not shake hard. Because all formed!

I am sure others had this issue as well. The biggest problem is raising the fry to adolescent. Need to spend time to observe the frys. From time to time, their appetite increase and we increase the feed accordingly. If overfed, the little ones succumb to death as I can see from the bloated stomachs. If underfed, slow growth or even stunt fishes. Also, other problem includes fighting for food. The pellets must be crushed. If not crush sufficiently the fry will simply stack on each other and start biting their mouths off. They don't understand. Death and damage is found on the mouth area. Crushing of pellets must be right. Too fine - the water become foul real fast.
Bascially, still the basic fishkeeping condition, water change, feed and big tanks. And time must be spent looking at the fry and observe them.
That is the big gap between a breeder and me. Can spawn, but bringing up the fries are another matter altogether.
Cheers, matey

Hi Colin,
I fuly agree with you on the abovementioned problem. What's your fatality rate? Interesting topic by itself btw, maybe we can chat about it over kopi :)

Hi Colin
Maybe becos of my laidback approach and time constraints, I have always left it to the daddy fish all these years....the natural way. From anecdotal evidence, I dont think my (experienced 3 hypan spp) spawn size or survival rate were any worse off than those raised separated. I do noticed the very small occassional 1 or 2 that did not survive the weaning from egg sac to solids, so out of say 26, I have average 25 growing up to "saleable size" of 1.5"+.
Caveat being I invest heavily on equipment. Free drop by, my tank floor during feeding time, seems alive :)

My fatality is erm for 2 weeks, I am losing 2-3 frys per two days. Put it this way, I lost about 30 frys in two weeks. Just two weeks.

I try to think about what you have mentioned. It is a good idea to leave it to parents. But there are some constraints that I am facing.
Btw, I am free. Will definitely be nice to drop by see the fish, equipment and stuffs. Thanks :)

Barmby,
I faced the same problems when i try to hatch the eegs with breeding box.
The fries will die easily and not strong enough compare with leave them with father. May it caused of shaking the cave or lack of love from father :D
Now i changed to leave the father hatching and take care fries 3-4 days after hatch. The fries look more heathy.
Just my exp.
Cheers,
Champ

Yooo! Champ, Happy new year,
I don't hatch the eggs myself, which is even tougher on survival. I leave the fry with father for a day or two and remove and place them in the breeding box :P

Wow that's a lot of fry loss, luckily L333 has bigger batches of eggs :D
I had 95% loss when I hatch the eggs myself, it's terrible.. Taking fries out when they're bigger is the best choice :D

valuable info! assuming that its a species comm, is there any risk of fries being eaten by others in the tank?
