For pleco’s lovers, here is another alternatives when you were in holiday next time, to conquer the famous Hong Kong Fish Street.

How to get there
The nearest MTR is Prince Edward MTR, instead of Mongkok, which is within 5 mins walking distance.
Just exit from EXIT B2 and u will see this famous stretch of road.

Pleco Dome 1: 水草苑水族

Once u exit from Exit B2, you will see this maroon-coloured building.

Just press its unit number and wait for the door to open.
Go up 1 storey and you will find them. Their signage is so prominent not to be missed.

The owner, James, and his wife are very friendly, especially they know that you are from Singapore.

Of cos, you need to be able to converse in Cantonese in order to speak to them, their Chinese are very limited, thou they understand Chinese, they can’t speak well.

His shop is well air-conditioned so it is good to spend the whole day there. Most of the HK hobbyist will come whenever they have any shipment. It was my honour to be able to meet up with some of them when I was there.

Pleco Dome 2: 觀賞魚

It is just situated directly beside 水草苑 on the ground floor, facing the main road, besides 洞庭湖.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP5107.1.jpg

You need to walk up the side staircase inside the shop to the upper level to hunt for plecos. The ground level was just selling normal tropical fishes.
I had no chance to meet up with the owner there. He seems to be very busy. I just secretly took some pix of his collection, with his knowledge.

Pleco Dome 3: 珍寶觀賞魚工作室

For those who are more adventurous, you can take a MTR out of the Kowloon city area, to Kuai Fong葵芳. It is situated near to the MTR so you would not get lost.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP4964.jpg

Exit from Exit B, you will see a bus interchange on your left. Walk across the interchange and u will see it.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP4965.jpg
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP4968.jpg

Situated inside a small lane in this complex, enter from the newsstand. You be able to locate it from their big poster signage.

Rico’s shop is quite small, maybe just the size of our bedroom, but the shop is clean and neat. The variety is quite limited as well, but it is not something common that we can find in fish street.

Address: 葵芳葵義路15號葵芳閣商場46號地舖 (商場入口在馬會投注站旁邊)
Contact: 98810813 / Rico

You can give him a call to see if he is open, before going. So as not to have a wasted trip there.

I am more than welcome to this idea. I hope anyone who have been on an oversea trip, would update us as well.
We can learn from one another.

Part 2: HongKong fish street - Interesting place, interesting people.

a. 水草苑.

This is me, together with james and his wife at his shop.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP4912.jpg

Look at the back of the pix, and you can see that his shop, which he share with another partner that specialise in cichilid, is very simple and neat. The floor is always dry at all times, unlike the condition that we saw at Aunty's place or other local LFS.

His shop is about the size of a 4 room flat, where they convert the kitchen to their packing corner.

These are some of the hobbyist that i happen to befriend on that day when the shipment came.
L-R: 阿仔, me, bee bee and dunno-what name.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP4935.1.jpg

b. 珍寶觀賞魚工作室

Had a chance to meet up with Rico.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee138/hotchiliz/IMGP4993.jpg

He is an importer himself too.
By the way, Hongkong does not need any import license to import fishes. Anyone with the capital can import themselves, unlike here, which is govern by AVA.

I had always thought that they sometimes import from Taiwan, but no~~~~ they don't. They mainly import from Brazil itself, through which suppliers, i dun think it is convenient for them to tell me.
However, by comparing the shipments, i was puzzled on why theirs seems better than us, since its from Brazil.

Happy Holidays to everyone here in Pleco Sg... anymore more additional inputs that may help me on my quest for pseudas in Mong Kok fish street..

Ive called James twice this year as recently as last week and so far no luck in getting l25s this closing year... so request from the forumers who have gone to hkg recently is what other shops may offer l25s?

This thread has been openned 2007 or exactly 3 yrs ago.. im sure there has been more trips far and between so please give me some inputs the next 72 hrs as my fookien or chinese is limited and certainly can not communicate in cantonese ....

thanks in advance!

Hi Manila Red,

Im glad that this has been useful to you.
I have yet went to HK after so many years. There are other fish farms on the sub-urban area which i have no time to venture to during my last trip.

One of them is Chai Wan fish farm which is located at the other corner of HK island. I wished i could update more about it but sadly, i didn't.

If any forumers who went there or know of any other shops/farms selling, do update here for the benefits of this community.

thanks.

Hello mr. Chillicrabz,

Ive been to Mong kok few times for Aros, altums and kois but only late this year is my passion for pseuda has set in that is why im excited for my upcoming visit.

Your thread is most certainly going to help starting from the spot on direction for you have mentioned prince edward as the exit pt.. ive always taken the mong kok station exit and really walk far and always been misguided for proper directions.... so this xmas holidays its going to be prince edward exit!

Sir Chillicrabz i hope to do justice in my next up to date... but i know that there are no pseudas in James place currently... i am just hoping and praying that some other forumer can give insights as who else could possibly have 24s or 25s selling in Mongkok....

Thank you and again Happy Holidays to everyone wherever we all may be this Yuletide season:)

I was able to visit James and his wife last december holidays and ive been notified by Sir James that they no longer will be in the same place starting this Jan 15th. They will move down to Mongkok Rd so the next time forumers want to visit him email first and he told me must exit from Mongkok station.

The husband and wife were very busy during december and i believe it was due to the pending transfer of shops... just about everything can be bought from this friendly couple its just that i was not prepared to handcarry pleco out of hong kong and he was also not prepared to send overseas or keep plecos for me until me next visit... anyways ill see him again very soon and promise to buy pseudas from his personal collection in those secret tanks that he keeps.... happy new year everyone:)

I would suggest getting a Tupperware/toyogo box to put ur packed fishes n packed inside ur luggage for check-in. This will ensure that no bags will leaked throughout the process as liquids are not allowed on board.

Not sure who told you it's cheap but they are more expensive than singapore. If you're looking at hypans and pesuda in general. Not sure about the rest.

Some species are cheaper by 10-20% if you convert due to strong spore currency. You can check out peipa.net to see if anyone letting go any plecos or check out the address of the pleco shop.Just a reminder, lots of pleco shops have since relocated to an industrial area as the govt is taking back Fish market street. You may find some interesting hybrids there...hope you have a great trip

hello guys, am able to visit hkg over the weekend and the two more important pleco shops are over at the Hong Kong Jockey club building just beside that #97 Mongkok Rd. AGh (james shop) is located at 3rd floor while hybrids from Taiwan is immediately on the 1st level.
