i haven't kept any large plecos before but i have been thinking about their breeding behaviour.
by large i mean those at least 12" or larger, better 2' ones.
i've seen a picture (i think in datz L-numbers) that shows caves dig on the banks of the river.
also read somewhere that says they use the caves to hibernate!
so which is it?
i tried to search the internet for spawning reports or behaviour = JEE-ROH!!
really curious if they do it like smaller acistrus/hypancistrus in caves.
so i would like to ask if anyone knows of any captive breeding of large sized plecos or observations reports of wild breeding.
i remember akoh telling me the big black goliath (2ft) of michael's have marble sized eggs!
so without any observations how can there be any possible captive breeding?!?
this topic should be of interest to the mega-pleco lovers.
yes, you prabably need a pond and a super-sized pump...
but hey, we can dream right? :p

i have heard of report of L14 breeding in koi pond..... this pair make love in a "cave" supoosingly shld be a place where the overflow pipe is situated.... when water level is hi, it flooded in "cave" and they will start breeding in it.
as for in aquarium, L114 is reported, recent heard of L25 from germany aso.
I have read from somewhere panaques breeding in koi ponds also but nothing was recorded. The babies were found in the filter of the pond

hahaha... i waiting to pay money for the membership... cannot read it yet!
i will try to make the x'mas gathering next month.
it would be a good time to meet and know the kakis other than the avatars.
and of course the pictures from edmundo's big day.
actually it was a challenge that "someone" gave to "somebody" that got me thinking on this subject.
would the requirements be the same, other than size of course?
if so, then you would need at least a fiberglass or full-size pond.
caves? will they be enough? won't you need to cement it to the floor?
just swishing side to side would send the cave rolling across the pond! :p
and probably an array or pumps to generate the waterflow for the big fellas.
but i don't dare imagine the water change to maintain water quality or induce breeding...

Over the years, I noticed different species has its unique " breeding pattern and requirement ", all based on my breeding program on zebra, dwarf royal twig, L144 etc.
About 2 yrs ago, I was offered a cemented pond in LCK near Mr. Teo's Farm to carry out or try out " Xingu Platinum " breeding, that was the reason why I was hunting high and low for big Xingu Platinum especially the alpha male. Rental fee was really a good deal ! $50 bucks per month. I had all the necessary things all planned out eg. caves made from sectioned big flower pots, neutral rocks and huge drift woods ( from one of the nursery before QH ) secured to the cave from both sides wth cable ties, filtering system, overhead shelter, air pump etc, BUT concerns like security, feeding, time, resources, system maintenance, distance, investment cost etc put me off the track ! *sigh* :( still KIV :(

yes, security at the farms can be an issue at best.
not to mention the commute to feed, maintanance, etc.
maybe its time start the dream again?... :D
PCS committee members this might be a good project to put the "red dot" on the world pleco map! ;)

Bro for this case I think the most concerned item here is the security. Other than that feeding wise I think we can work out something and see how it goes? In fact I have heard of people not feeding their panaques for months yet they survive on DW alone.

if you can find a trusted landlord, sercurity is least to worry. Feeding i would agree with YH, DW and algae shld be able to carry the plecos thro once a week feeding regime hence poses another least wori issue.... eat less system maintenance will be a easy job, this means system maintenance issue is aso solved..... if die die must feed, can ask the landlord workers to feed... pay $$ oni... prom solve. This is wat proxy arowana breeders are doing, pay pple to feed for u. The issue which we guys reali will face is electricity/power supply.... how to sustaiin the bill? plus rental.... and food, per month shld eat into $250-$300........ if we can work out the figure.... shld n0t be a difficult dream. who want? fencing is about 600-1000.

edmundo,
that should not be a big problem to get translation.
check out altavista-babelfish ----> babelfish (http://babel.altavista.com/)
only thing is, you have to get used to their "grammer".
its not constructed like english.
maybe chinese, i don't know cos cina cannot make it! :(
but i've tried it for translations of breeding reports of yamato and red coral pencilfish.
after reading some "translation" you get the hang of it.
you are usually able to get the jizz of the information.
"technical" words are the ones that mess the translation.
by "technical" i don't mean exactly technical.
it can be a "local" or native word that is english does not have a correct equivalant.

cut the fibreglass tank into half?
cut the fibreglass tank into half?
The cylinderical fiberglass tank is 7 feet in diameter and about 9 feet in lenght, the bottom is blind and the top has a small opening for some connection. Once I sectioned into halves (length-wise), I only use the blind end and buried about 4 feet into the ground ( I got somebody to dig the ground before hand ). Thats it ! minimum cost ! :D

wow, cool tank/pond!
is this at your work place or is it "BOSS" that was eyeing your FF?
btw what is an FF? :p
you know, if the water all came down through pipes...
you couls use then angle all of them along the side of the pond.
that may induces a nice steady current round the tank.
also, the season is now just nice ----> raining
since this is an EL NINIA year (cooler) best to try breeding now! :D
if EL NINIO comes next year... argh....
i think my 4ft planted open air tank will wither and just grow algae...

The Koi pond is at my work place. The pic was taken about 2 yrs ago, now a lot of changes made eg additional filtration system, the outlets etc. Even thot this pond is open-air and expose to direct sunlight, the water is still crystal clear ! BUT did alot of stuffs ! :D

edmundo,
is feifeng a kind of food fish?
as in fish that restaurants use.
akoh,
cool office pond!
the one my my workplace is a dumping ground for unwanted fish.
guppy, discus, angel fish, parrot fish, louhan, etc etc
i am actually impressed that they survive!!
on top of that every clown that walks by feeds them.
now that i have mentioned that i'd like to test the water to check the quality.
overstocked and overfed!
two major no-no's and they all look really healthy.
maybe its the sun! :D
actually i find that once a pond exposed to sunlight stabilizes...
all things fall in place until the equilibrium is disturbed.
then it goes through a cycle and settles down.
but yes, lots of work to be done before that happenes.
btw, what's the current inhabitants in the pond?

The pond is under my care ie feeding and maintenance hence nobody else can feed the fishes, put or dispose unwanted fishes, do any maintenance work except ME ! :D .
For the purchase of food and maintenance stuffs, I have a " collection box " in the canteen, so far the collection not bad leh ! the employee have been quite supportive, especially every now and then got people strike 4D lah ! :D, just recently my boss strike 4D and donated a 10kg pack of koi food ! Champion !.
I have about 12 kois ( purchsed from Max's and Nippon Koi Farm ), 1 FF and 3 plecs. The Kois are sponsored by bosses, department heads and work unit members. The FF and Plecs are mine. :D
