Dettol? Colgate? interesting......... i think TW is a good feed actuali but alway haf 2nd thot of the cleanliness :)
Rinse them in water together with listerine. This is what the killie fish keepers do. Their method I believe should be one of the most secured ones as tubifex worms are one of killie fish's main diet :)
Oh and my method is to rinse them in formalin

i dont know if this REALLY works as i cannot verify the effects.
after i buy the TW i keep them without using them for at least 3 days.
the rational is that by that time the toxins would be purged from them.
parasites and germs... maybe not though.
then use them after the "quarantine" period.
i did come across an article or two on "growing" them yourself.
but the floor space required is quite large.
something like 1mx1m.
if i recall correctly its by jim quarles? (of discus fame)
if anyone is interested to try let me know and i'll try to dredge the article out.
hopefully, not from my a**!! hahaha
i have and still do believe that TW is the "best" food for fish.
of course this statement does not consider their uncleanlinesss...

Spot on ! :D coupled with pollution and whatnot " harvested TW " these days are not as " feedable" as in the earlier yrs ! that's the reason why I stop feeding them to my fishes ! :(.
One cories farm in SG are still feeding their champion cories with treated TW ! and won many trophies in Aquarama competition. :D

okay here's the article from jim quarles (RIP).
"Free Tubifex Worms" (http://article.discusnews.com/cat-01/freetubifex.shtml)
and another with some information on the killies guys using some.
"Tubifex2" (http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/feeding/tubifex2.shtml)
how i wish one of the local farms will produce them clean...
i wouldnt mind paying the premium for it.
the "old days" when tubifex worms were clean were the "golden years" of local fish farming...
makes you wonder about the water we have today.
and thats not taking into account the "NEW water"!!! :(

How to do it the right way?
so many ways, you can boil, double boil, stir fry, steam, grill, smoke, the best way is to decot like chinese medicine, for every 50 grams of TW decot with eight bowls of water bring in to a boil with slow heat till one bowl residual.:D

How to choose good TW?
The following pointers are i looked for:
1) Color - reddish brown (healthy)
2) Lively - Knock on the tray, they should retract instantly
3) smell - no foul smell
What do you guys look out for?

for live TW
number one is to look for healthy worms - very bright reddish brown.
but sometime quite hard to look for this as they pack them with minimal water.
so you may only confirm they are healthy when you are home...
there are a few waste that they have.
grey stuff - i suppose this is the clay soil that they were harvested from.
yellowish brown or white - dead worms (some short white ones are not tubifex worms).
sticky yellow brown mucus - usually you see this after you water change with chlorine water. i suspect the chlorine causes them to secrete this.
so i only use aged water to flush clean them.
and use about half of the worms i buy.
while cleaning i try to harvest only the healthy protions and throw the rest away.
quarantine for three days before i dare to use.
but as mentioned - pathogens will still be there... :(

also, i notice these days there's a lot of "rubbish" in the worms.
fish bones, and other kinds of worms...

hahaha.. i will be working in nks helping bros to choose healthy tubiex worms. Give me a thinker if you guys need :p
Alright, i shall roll out my experiences and my way of settleing tubiex worms.
- Practise a good habit by running tubiex worms through cold water.
- Lefting behind clean worms, add in a pail with black(Kleaves) water
- Energise and keep them alive with air bubble(oxygenated)
- Consolidate all healthy worms the next day, ready to feed.
- Ocassionally include tubiex worms to have a balance diet meal
Not 100percent asurance, but so far so good. :D:D:D
