previously i used to use API 5 in 1. it was enough for me till i had to cycle a tank and realised its inadequacy. then i used tetra brand ammonium/nitrite and nitrate. the ammonia was always off. by that reading, my fishes would've been dead a few times over. yet the fishes were all happy and the guppies were still making babies and adding to bioload.

then i switched to API ammonia just today and it gave me a more realistic figure which was about 5 times less than what the tetra kit showed. so i'm looking for a reliable nitrite and nitrate test kit to prepare myself for the 422.

are there any test kits which you find reliable? would appreciate any recommendations or sharing of experiences, both good and bad.

I would recommend sera test kits. Although I do not have the one that tests ammonia but I have the kits that test ph, kh and a few other elements that is needed for my planted tank and so far it has been quite accurate. Bro maybe you want to check the expiry date for your tetra test kit. It might have expired ;)

hi lyh,

i checked the whole box when i bought it, tetra test kits doesn't state the expiry date...only batch number. i tried to make sense of the batch numbers but i doubt it implies date of manufacture.

but i've since changed to API ammonia. the tetra one i had tested 1.5mg/l on singapore tap water; after it kept registering 1.5mg/l on my tank water. that was the last straw for me.

but since a few of the members suggested sera kits, i'll give it a try. maybe sera nitrite and nitrate

bought my tetra ammonia from c328...it was pretty dusty and aunty gave me like 6 bucks off the listed price for the ammonia one. i should've known :P

p.s. btw, may i ask what are the benefits of joining pleco club singapore as a member?

Hi bro for Tetra products if I didn't remember wrongly, you need to go online to their website and check the expiry date against the batch number. They do not print it on their box.

Honestly,

we've yet to acquire any concrete black & white for member benefits, though we are currently in mid of gathering exclusives for our members.

Our emphasis on acquiring club members is to gather like-minded individuals with passion for Plecos ... and essential to convey and impart proper knowledge with expertise to the hobby

Club events, gatherings or even house visits are common among members ...

Essentially all entities and clubs require some form of finance standings for its recurring expenses which speaks aid gained from club membership.

Above speaks forth my forewords that in our current standings we hope members to look forward to interactions between members and enjoy the hobby rather than bells & whistles.

Cheers

hi sotongman,

i guess the running of this forum would incurr certain amount of expenses also. :)

i'm asking this because i just ordered a 422 from david. i "heard" about him from AF forum actually. dropped him an e-mail and he seemed to know his stuff. i paid him a visit and boy is he funny. very nice chap.

he'll be sending the tank in the next few days. but i did notice that he wrote "discount given to pleco club" on the invoice before i left. i didn't have the chance to clarify as it only occured to me later that he thought i was a member of PCS. i feel bad about it cos i'm not.

on a personal basis. i like plecos. i think these fishes have a unique personality (i can't find a better word as personality is derived from the word "person"...which shouldn't be used on plecostomus [plecostality?]):p

but i agree with an earlier post on this forum that creating more awareness about the types of pleco a fish-hobbyist can keep is important. i didn't know about alot of things till about a year plus into the hobby. as a result of my ignorance and negligence, i lost 3 pseudas, L273, 2x L24; all juveniles. and i've never touched another pseuda since.:(

but i am learning. from multiple sources, planet catfish, PF, PCS. but there's really limited knowledge on the net really. and books cover catfish in general. even DATZ's coverage is limited.

so forums like these are really a big plus for me :):)

thank you very much

Bro I hope PCS is a good platform for you to learn more about plecs. If you have any questions please post them here. I'm sure many bros will be more than willing to pass on their knowledge :D
