View Full Version : 16 inch xingu platinum in a 3 ft tank?

Just wonder whether a 16 inch fella can live comfortably in a std 3 x 1.5 x 1.5 feet tank?

Filtration wise will be OHF with 8 trays powered by tom400. top 2 trays will be wool follow by 4 tray of bacteria house and last 2 trays will be biohome+.

Intend to do 30% water change weekly..

Is it advisible?

One piece should be okay, but still think the tank is small...... Very little room for water parameter error....

Dun see any prom with this setup............... seen 18" in similar tank size n running on eheim cannister only.......... :)

Bro I would suggest a minimum of 36"X18"X18" tank. I feel that the 15" width is a bit too narrow for your xingu to turn comfortably. My 3' tank with 18" width I feel is just nice for my 13" fellow to turn (however, it has some difficulty turning on the right side as there is a piece of DW inside). If you haven't bought the tank, do take in factors like DW and pump. They can make the tank real small. My $0.02.;)

Beside the long chew chew and pectorial spike, do male have higher hump too?

Price of plecos so far not determine by sex.....IMO, more of a taste and perferences.

Few factors, apart from gender :
1 - size
2 - condition of plec eg finnage, chew chew, eyes etc
3 - colouration
4 - place of origin
5 - uniqueness eg "kok" head, long whiptail etc

Big bulky showpiece male with impressive chew chew will always command a premium. IMHO, when someone crack the breeding code of panaques, the big females' price will shoot up because females are so rare (males are more often collected are they are territorial and stay put in one spot, females swims all over....).:)

Do you think the reason for female to be rare could be either due to
1) No chew, no market demand, so fishermen release them when caught

or

2) Fishermen believe in preserving females to ensure non-extinction of species.

Any suggestion?

As mentioned by Bro Gecko, they tends to swim all over hence difficult to catch them, the other reason is once caught, the fishermen or importer will keep them for breeding ! just like zebra plec. :)

As long as there is DW the chances of it getting starved is not high

Somehow feel that Xingu don't like DW as much as Peru green. Seldom see her on the DW. Or my DW not tasty?:D

Also from her poos, didn't see much of wood particle which i observe on my peru green last time?
