Xianz... after Bro Orh's pleco passed away last week, my beloved champion L253 passed away this afternoon :(
Only discovered it when I came home from work this evening :(

Had observed it to be a bit out of sorts on Friday evening, so decided to do a WC on Saturday evening, since it's been a mth since the last WC.

Noticed it upside down on Sunday morning, but got silent mob, so had to rush out before giving it more attention.

After coming back from camp, found it swim erractically & frantically ard the tank, so immediately set up a QT, took it out & added some Gen 3 anti-internal parasite, as I noticed that it's stomach is bloated & it's tummy not able to touch ground. Covered the tank with paper, leaving a small gap at the bottom so that I can observe it's breathing & not stress it out.

This morning, when I left for work, observed that it's breathing has become less rapid & it's able to lay flat on the ground, little knowing that it may be in it's last few hours before dying :(

Here're a couple of pics of the dead L253, note that there was no foul smell detected from the dead fish, which puzzled me even more, as previously my other plecos will emit foul smell after dying for a few hours :(

Aiyah, realised can't link to AF gallery :p

i dont know whether does this work or not......but what do you guys think??.......deworm our pleco every 2-3 months??......be it sick or not sick.....just deworm them as how i also deworm my discus every two months??

my tots is......there maybe some parasites in the tank water which we cant notice at all......althought many times,we believe we have give them a tip top water condition liao.....but we are wrong??do you guys agree??

how could a pleco just sudden died just like that??
i begin to get numb about all this sudden death incident liao.....exp like my papa luteus,my recent AA.....ect...ect.
both of them do suffer cases like sudden death too.....how to explain, till now no answer at all.....:o:o

Bro like what bro L046 and edmund said I think it is due to your WC regime

Could it be that those that emit smell have undigested food in their tummy?

I've been doing WC once a month, so far nothing happened to my other plecos. I've checked the water parameters, like pH & nitrate levels & all was well. But there could be other parasites like what Bro Orh said that can't be detected...

I did remember something prior to the death of my L253.

It has started to go up to the surface to grab the food sticks which I feed to my aro, could the contents of the food stick be unsuitable for plecos?

It's those OEM food stick which I bought from NKS, that are made by QH.

Could it also be due to droppings from parrot fishes? Just intro 1 month ago...

As for regular deworm, as I house all my plecos with my aro, I can't use the Gen 3 anti-internal parasite. Any other recommendations which can be used for all fishes?

Bro, it's not the parasites I'm concern about, It's the bacteria in the "old water" thats worry me !. Partial water change do help ! just a thinker for you ! :D

Same tank as all my other plecos, with my aro, 5 blood parrots & a yellow severum, in a 522 tank :p

But I very kiasu, got an OHF with 4 layers of tray & a cannister filter with built-in UV.

Although I seldom do big scale WC, I'll draw out abt 10% weekly & top up with fresh water when the water level drops below the level of my surface skimmer inlet :D

one month no wc..... then what sudden death are u talking about..... u murderer.....

All the other 4 plecos also nothing wrong what, alive & swimming & gobbling down tetrabits & algae wafers :p

But I really wonder if it's due to the L253 eating the aro food stick. It's the only fellow which swims up to the surface & whack the food sticks

peckio

so u wan the whole tank to wipe out? if that is the case then you consider multi murderer. must give them the best water quality mah. their survival depend on u. they cannot swim away due to poor water quality as if they are in the wild. one fish gone is an indication already.......

Yah, now will do 20% WC every fortnightly.
Anyway, I still think it could be due to the food sticks, which may contain things not meant for the well-being of plecos. As the L253 has a slight case of bloated stomach before I QT it with Epsom salt...

Would like to try this, but need recommendation of medication that won't affect my aro, which is housed together with my plecos.

Any ideas?

Bro you don't deworm even those that just came in from the wild? I have been thinking on the deworming thing very long already. Basically this is what I have thought.

If I deworm I'll feel safer and do not need to deworm the whole tank should it start to show signs of having intestinal parasite after I introduced it into the main tank.

If I don't deworm, less hassel and the fellow might not even have the parasite

So end of day deworm or not  2 schools of thought :)

Nah... Although it's stable I'll still quarantine it to play safe. Even plecos from other hobbyists I'll also quarantine them. :D
