hi everyone,
i've been keeping panaques for about a year now. and thanks to advices given by some forum-mates, they've lived longer than they should under the care of an in-experienced hobbyist.
i started feeding them hikari algae discs before going on to veggies (zuchini and carrots) and i've been following some threads (lyh's thread on NLS wafers for plecs) and i thought i'd share some of my experiences with those.
hikari dics:
was really excited when i got my 250g pack. i thought i had reached the pinnacle of panaque food really. but after understanding from the PF forum on ingredients, i'm not so keen on this brand anymore. other than that, it breaks up real easy and doesn't take soaking in "garlic guard" or "entice" well. plus i have bare bottom so it's frustrating to see my plecs push the almost-flat discs on and on and on before they manage to latch on it.
NLS H2O stable wafers:
this is by far the MOST-unsoluble wafer disc i've ever encountered. after 24hrs, it still looks the same. i followed the website and fed my plecs for 10 days. after that i threw in both hikari and NLS. the plecs went for hikari, period. but my plecs go crazy over the NLS's "spectrum THERA A+" sinking pellets. they'd come out in broad day light and fight with the guppies, corys, clown loaches and angelfishes for it. could be the garlic as it's one of the ingredients
JBL spirulina tabs?: (can't remember the name correctly)
breaks up in water really really bad. i have strong current in my tank so it disappears into powder after a while.
omega one veggie rounds:
i was skeptical about this one. but it was the most expensive C328 had so i thought why not; $17.90 for a 118g bottle. in terms of attractiveness, it's on par with hikari. but in terms of nutrients and solubility in water. it's excellent. it breaks up after a while but not as soon as hikari's. and not ridiculously long as NLS. i checked the website and i like the way they run their business. but some of you might not take to it as the top 5 ingredients are "whole kelp, spirulina, whole salmon, cod, herring. (kinda like fish meal)
but i'm feeding a cocktail of hikari,NLS,omega everyday.
sure hope that helps. my panaques are all healthy and playful; heartfelt thanks to some of you really
take care
