hi,
i met this unusual situation which i will now describe and those who've experienced similar predicaments do let me know how you dealth with it.
my ammonia lvl usually hover around 0.25-0.5ppm.
last water change of 30% was 8th Feb.
added paraguard after adding a 2inch L190 and an unknown pleco (will post pics later, it's about 5 inches)
through the week, i fed carrots twice and zuchinni once. the pleco poo looked like yu-sheng shreds...
when i checked the water parameters on 14th Feb, it was 8 ppm ammonia! nitrate was 25mg/l. boy was i shocked. as i had to go for a camp, i had no choice but to add ammolock and change water on 16th and 17th feb.
here's the weird thing. all the fishes were fine. no casualties. i tested the ammonia test kit on tap water. it worked fine. tested on tank again, readings went through the roof. it was about 4ppm after water change on sat and about 2/3 ppm after water change today.
going by the ammonia readings, my fishes would have been dead thrice over.
so here's the most suspicious factor, the paraguard. but the bottle said "filter safe."
or was it some chemicals in my tank that caused the ammonia test kits to react to it? (i usually add stress coat + zyme, melafix if needed)
these are the specs of my 422 tank:
3 x fluval internal (mechanical)
1 x aquaball 2212 (fine mechanical)
1 x 2028 (ehfimech,substrat pro, biohome)
1 x 2080 (ehfimech,substrat pro, biohome)
7 panaques, 1 L134, angelfishes, neon tetras, guppies
any advice would be deeply appreciated
take care
