View Full Version : Different feeds
With so many different kind of feeds available in the market and have been used by plec hobbyists, can someone enlighten me on the possible effects of overfeeding the different kind of feeds. For example overfeeding of feeds that are meant for goldfish and koi (higher fat content). May I know what will happen to the plec and the reasons behind.

lyh,
i have read somewhere that "coldwater" fish require more fat in their diet.
especially when they are growing up.
the ratio of protein to fat is like 3:1 to 3.5:1
most canivore type fish food is in the range of 45% protein to 5% fat for a ratio of 9:1 to 10:1
BUT, herbivores are like 30% to 5% range.
So there is "more fat" to compensate for less protein in the diet.
clearly, fish that don't need the fat will develop "overweight" problem like human too.
fatty liver, heart problem, blah blah blah....
that said, you can still feed as a "treat" or to vary the diet.
just not too often or as a staple diet though.
one thing i found out is that most fish food use some land animal or "fish meal" for the protein.
fish meal is not made only with fish content!
but an amalgamation of veggie, fish and land animal by-products.
i don't think fish stomach were made to process these.
which brings me to OSI and Omega food products...
check out the ingredient and you'll know what i mean immediately.
"whole salmon"... " whole herring"... "salmon eggs"... "clams"...
wah piang! better than my typical mee-pok meal.
ever wonder what "fish" balls are actually made of these days?
or should i say "what % of a fishball is made of fish?"
and people wonder why they get cancer! :p

Hi celticfish thanks for the detailed explanation. May I know what are the symptoms of fatty liver and will the plec die off eventually or will they suffer in the long run. Sorry for so many questions :o

You still dare to say.

i must admit i have no direct experience on "fatty liver" and etcetera.
though the information i read didnt specify any symptoms i dont think we will be able tonotice it as hobbyist.
the fish might look "nice" and fat but thats probably as much as we can observe without doing an autopsy! :D
but the information i read mentions that it shortens the regular lifespan of the fish.
as i have only come back to the hobby for about 3 years now i dont have livestock that has been with me for long enough to test this theory.
if you follow the logic proposed its hard to disagree that the extra fat content will cause tropical fish health problems, just like in humans.
if you've been diving you will realize that heat production burns a lot of energy.
so its intuitive that coldwater fish need higher energy to maintain body heat.
in other words, the extra fat has a use for these fish.
@ peckio, ROTFL!!
Go easy on the feeding ! :D

I wanted to try out the different types of feed and see what happens but I thought I should find out the consequences first. I've been using your feeding regime and now they all come to the front to beg for food :D

so far, i have tried almost all sinking food, except novoprawns and crab cuisine. In fact, the fastest way to pump them up, is thru the high fats content. However, thats also the fastest way for them to up lorry.
Not all pseudas that i have kept, show signs of bloated stomach through that regime. Some shows faster growth rate. Esp L160/96, L114, black pseudas. However, at the end of the day, some who are more prone to such bloatedness, dies. Top of the list, would be the L160, again.
I only tried 1 pack of different kind of feed, some shows positive results which i still continue to use them. Some, which i find not so gd, i will just say good bye.
Hixxxi Marine A/S is one of them which i only dare to find a little. The results cant be describe if feed as a regular diet. 100% that the fishes will grow FAT.
Cichilid bio gold, sinking but i hate the smell, very artifical.
Trxxxxal colour wafer is just not to my liking, the food just cant seems to sink completely and it gets soften easily, breaking into powdery form if left there for awhile.
JxL Pleco chips just dun sink, and it floats too.
JxL novo tabs is good, but abit exp.
JxL premium tabis is good, but cant find in SG, only have 1 that bought from HK. Exp too.
Currently only focusing on Hikaxx carni, massivour, saki purple, discus bio gold, JXL novobits, unknown brand shrimp pellet.
Afterall, we dun see any major difference when we feed one particular food, unless those of the extreme. At the end of the day, its which food we prefer, we will feed them. It just give us the confidence that it works.
It does means that novoprawn which promote shell growth to CRS will have the same effect to the spikes of our pseudas. Maybe it will, but the results may be insignificant.

Im waiting for tropical dalio tabs n astacolour tabs to launch, so tempted when i saw at AQ last year. They make it in tabs forms, instead of the original flakes.
