I have come across a hobbyist who told me that Blue-Eye Panaque shouldn't be kept in a community tank with other species of plecos. The reason being that the Blue-Eye Panaque has some bacteria that were built up in its body system that will bring harm to other plecos.
Can anyone with experience keeping Blue-Eye Panaque enlighten? Thanks :)

i'm not a pleco "guru" but i find that reasoning flawed.
if that were the case, wouldn't the blue-eyes be the only pleco in the harvest area due to its "harmful bacteria"?
if that is not so than how can what your source say be true?!?

doubt the statement ..
recall that bro gecko keeps his blue eye along with other plecos ...
believe he's the best individual for above statement ...

I share the same sentiments but still would like to play safe. Perhaps Lawrence can help to clear up my doubts.

Bro I replied in AF and pasting it here too:
Most if not all of our plecs especially wild caught ones would have bacteria or virus or parasites.
It was specifically documented in the case of the blue eyes P.cochliodon sometimes wrongly id as P. Suttoni (see bottom of page 2, blue eyed pleco).

Most of the time even with seemingly heathy specimens, the bacteria or virus are present but is dormant. However, if water parameters are compromised or stressed caused by fights or insufficient space or food, outbreaks happen and if not caught or treated early becomes deadly and is known to wipe out entire comm.
So it is true that the Blue Eyed has the bacteria but the same also can be said for any other species (although not documented).
I have the unfortunate experience of seeing that happened, the outbreak spreading uncontrollably like wildfire. But I know as a fact that the 'plague' was not started by the Blue Eyed, at least it was not the first royal in the comm to fall sick, it was ultimately killed by it. Surprisingly the L330 and L190 were immuned to it and were the only survivors. The possible theory then is the plague was passed from either one (L330 and/or L190) and killed the other royals including the Blue Eyed who did not have the same immunity. Pretty much like how a Amazon tribe of people were completely wiped out by the common flu when they first came into contact with the modern man.
Hope this helps somewhat and personally if I were to get a Blue Eyed again, it will be in a tank all by itself as it is too rare and valuable to risk it.

in factual, almost all animal species are parasite/bacteria carriers.

I guess its our local buying power is not as strong as them for our importers to bring them in.
Sometimes we would be wandering how come other countries have at the point of us and not us. Partly is due to the fact that we need a import license to import fishes, while they does not need one. If they got the $$,any tom dick harry in hk/tw can import fishes by themselves.

actually all you need is a "transhipper" with the required license.
you just have to pay for the guy's license to use for your shipment.
not to mention the accompanying GST... :(

I dun mean hobbyist but LFS sellers. They shipped in fishes themselves n not thru their local fish distributors, like QH, SH, in our context. Whether they have a license themselve, i dun think so. Maybe they tompang using others license lor.
