View Full Version : How to ID hypancistrus?

As I've always been saying I'm still a pleco "nubie".
Though I've bred one my knowledge is very confined to the species and its family.

So the other day I managed to get one of the AQ guys fired-up on a pleco breeding project.
And the three of us were sifting through DATZ for a suitable L-number.
But as you guys know there's only one picture to represent the many possible morphs of each L-number.
We eventually picked a couple and headed to NKS yesterday.

For instance, he was looking at the tank with L236...
And we were all trying to find out which it was.
We borrowed the store's copy of Aqualog and got no where.

So the question is really how do you ID them?
From what I've read about L134 there is what is called a "high pattern" and a "low pattern".
One being "normal" stripes and the other broken stripes.
I wondered if this extends to the other striped L-numbers and makes precise ID quite an uphill task.
To top it off some L134 specimens have yellowish stripes while some have white stripes.
(Yes, I know L134 is not a hypancistrus. I use it as an example as its the next L-number I'm most familiar with... :o)

Essential questions are:

a) Is there a precise method to ID them?
b) Does the high/low pattern in L134 extend to other striped L-number? (this would need to qualify, similar or hypancistrus kind)
c) Thoughts on the variation of stripe colour (ie - between whitish and yellowish within an L-number kind).

Any additional method/s and comments appreciated! :)

i think the only way is to refer to more pics on them, either through books, mag or other foreign websites forum from HK, TW, etc, provided they are also into eg. L134.
Another way is to specialize in that species and observe the outcome ourself, through tikum all possible look alike species. From there, i guess u would be more familiarized with them.

That will be the joy of pleco keeping that sometimes u may not know wat L-numbers u are really keeping.

Btw, i heard that L134 will soon be banned from export. Tat was the info by my hk friend. Dunno isit true anot. He was told by one of the LFS he frequent.

According to someone in PF suppose to be banned from last year! ---> here (http://plecofanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52552)

PCF discussion ---> here (http://planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22369&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=28a478c02e57e887d3920c36efcac61f)

They will be changing the list, which is currently an approved list, to one that only allows scientifically described species.
Of course they will also acertain the wild population before added these to the allowed list.
So next time the slower the scientist work at describing them... *haiz*

I suppose we should get "our friendly pleco importer" to sapu the market this season. :D
When I read between the lines of the reports coming out I believe the dam projects are the real reason for the change.
They have to "do something" to justify the building and smoke screen for diversion.
So in all likelyhood it can only become harder to get wild specimens in future.
I'm sure there will be smuggled supply but I'm also sure the prices will sky-rocket too... :(
I can just imagine plecos in general going the L046 route in price.

Though I'm concentrating my efforts on L046 I'm starting to itch to try another L-number... Maybe L200 x 10 pcs at 4" to 6"?

Go for a cross between L46 and L134 lah, i guess the outcome would be very interesting.

I just bought 3 hypancistrus from NKS. But cant figure out whether they are L236, L129, L66 or L333 or a mix of all of them...

Oh and I can't get pictures as they have all zoomed into the driftwood tangle in my 4ft community tank...

Can anyone help?
