Wow:eek:...I was thinking of revamping my 6 footer into a hypan. habitat...Just the right time for me to look up on:)
Btw, how many lucky zebras are you housing in this bungalow and what kind of substate would you recommend?

About 30pcs of adults will be transferred to this tank. The one I currently using is lapis sand, 22kg per pkt ( 1 to 2mm, grain size ) but reckon I will mix some 4 to 5 mm to give it a natural setting.
Tank still running in ! :(

Wow...30pcs of adults...then there must be alot of caves in it...sorry but I don't know how lapis sand looks like. Saw some as fine as beach sand and wanted to use but afraid of choking up my filters.

Wow bro, how heavy is the rocks?! Can the cabinet tahan? This is the one thing that keeps me from adding more layers of rocks...looks impressive:cool:
Maybe need more wood to cover the middle from top down to sand. Also I was advised not to mix round rocks with slates but up to you, the color tone is consistent.
Same filteration as before?

Allen, i have a comment............ IMO a solid black background/bare will looks beta den a half height tree root background. Otherwise lower the water level to 18" n tape a black trimming to cover the water level "margin" so that the imperfect background will be nicely covered up. Wts ur view? :)

Slates total weight is 150kgs. An object will display its own weight hence more slates or rocks ! lesser the volume !.
Some of the slates are over hanging hence I have to use the bigger rocks to support it.
Same filtration - 2 units of 2260. :D

Agreed ! did thot of removing the backdrop !, still looking out for either 2.5' height black Oyama or those tree-roots backdrop.
Thanks for the thinker. :D

Errr.... I think its an object will displace its volume lah.
The difference in density (between the rock and water) will be the additional weight.
Also, after the filling in of rocks and all....
How to change background?!?
That would mean removing everthing to move the tank for space to make the change!!

Exactly, given the same volume x, x amount of rocks/slates will weigh much more than x amount of water....I would be nervous unless the wooden cabinet is reinforced by a steel stand.
The trade-of of the volume of water as you add in other rocks/slates is a given.
How ? like that better ? :D

I didn't use the Oyama paper for the back-drop, I used another alternative ! easier and less hassle ! :D

Nice setup you have, very envious ... Hope to replicate one, using my 4 feet tank soon.:D
1)Can I check what type of slabs are you using? Only granite slabs? Are there any type of stones/wood/gravel that we might refrain from using in a zebra community tank?
2)Is it necessary to only use cannister filter for gravel based tanks? I am planning to use OHF for the tank, thus can I use those powerheads sitting at the base of the tank? Will the sand/gravel get suc ked into it?
Thanks in advance :)
