Hi All,

Just like to share my incident here, hope to reduce my sadness.
i caught pleco fever a few months back and started collecting them.

Here was my collection list:
L02 – Panaque sp
L07 – Leporacanthicus cf galaxies
L29 - Leporacanthicus galaxias
L18 - GoldNugget; Baryancistrus (Medium dots)
L81 - GoldNugget; Baryancistrus (Fine dots)
L177 - GoldNugget; Baryancistrus (Big dots)
LDA33 – Big White Spot
L47 - Mango Pleco Brazil
L56 (LDA 46) - Parancistrus
L66 - King Tiger Pleco
L134 - Leopard frog pleco
L163 - Peckoltia Big Spot
L172a - Golden Heterodon; Leporacanthicus
L191 – (Dull eyee) Royal pleco (Panaque sp)
L200 – Green pleco
L240 - Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias
L259 (LDA 32) Pseudancistrus sp
L262 Yellow (fine) spot
L264 Sultan Pleco
L288 – Peckoltia sp

i put about 5 broken pots on the bare tank and over-run with a good filtration system. Do daily siphon the debris...........thing were going well.

The tank looks kind of bare and empty, especially, on the mid, and top portion of the tank............so went to get a 'Paretroplus Maculatus' from Madagascar. That's when all the problem started!

The pleco caught white spot and one by one started dying.
The photo shows the remaining 10+ pieces.
By the time i post this thread..........i only left with three................. :(

To be honest, i'm really disappointed and not sure if i can start keeping pleco again.........just trying to seek for comfort............. :(

Yes, akoh, you are right quarantining is very important.
Guess, this is what i have to pay for, for being lazy, not quarantining the fish. :o

wolverine,

For white spot. Throw in two thermostat heater. Up the temperature from 30 till 32degree C. White spots will die.

sorry this is a layman method i know of.

hi barmby, thanks for your advice. i believe this is the most basic and yet most effective for pleco..............

i don't have a thermostat. But i will sure get one if i'm going to start my pleco collection again.

By the way, can the experts here advice me what are the hardy pleco with nice patterned that i can keep?

i know L14 is one of it, beside this species, is there other varieties?

Hi bro I'm sorry to hear about what had happened. From what I observed, Melafix is too slow to fight immediate fire. I too lost a tank of plecs before so now they are all in individual tank.

Bro actually I don't think it's the new fish alone that caused the problem. It should be due to your overcrowding. Did you test your nitrates/pH often?

I lost quite a lot of fish during the same period due to white spot as well, as everyone suspects there's something in the tap water that may have caused this: higher chloramine levels, and very low temperatures due to the weather. I used AquaMedi's melachite green/formalyde to treat the water, as well as increasing the temperature to 32deg.. Lost over 10 fish as well.

I readily admit I overstocked this tank, so I think it's the same case for you as well.

Hope you get the confidence to try again. ;)
