Bro the most common set up is to have lots of DW and lapis gravel. As for the water, after you have boiled your DW just leave them in the tank and your water would turn brown from the tannin leach by the DW. ;):D

Boiling of DW is to kill the germs or bacteria that might have infested on the DW itself. By doing, we are ensuring that the DW that we put in our tank are germs-free.
All Dw will produce those tanning leech in the water.
Similar as putting ketapang leaves.
To ensure that we are not adding something harmful into our tanks, it is best that we could give newly purchase DW a boiling hot bath.
Cheers.

There r numerous ways ... pros and cons to preparation of DW ..
Hot water is one common way ... but problem is that it'll create hairline cracks to the wood .. resulting in faster break down ... and likely faster release of tanin due to more exposure in surface area ...
Personal preference is use of Potassium Permaganate ... for its a strong oxidizing agent .. that burns almost all organic matter (inclusive of your skin) ... so most microganisms and parasites couldnt stay alive in its presence ..
no doubt Potassium Permaganate does have its problems .. for wood does absorb some Potassium Permaganate and in turn introduced to yr tank .. but no concerns should it be rinsed well ... and small dosages of Potassium Permaganate will not harm your tank ...
Cheers

You have to make sure the DW " footing " on the tank is minimum, if not, it will trapped food and waste.
