Looking at the prices of zebras in Europe and US (forget Australia), the prices are really escalating  I am not sure if the Brazil export ban is really due to the fact that zebras are threatened in the wild, or for whatever reason, it is really a pity not more people can enjoy this beautiful fish.
I remember when Ben just started his hole in the wall at TB market, I saw the first zebra at about $50. It was so beautiful that the impression it left on me lasted for years. Of course I couldn't bring myself to pay so much for a ****er:o Years later, I tried my first piece at $120 (I think) and of course before the internet days, it died. And the next one died too.
Finally,...(to be continued).

Finally, with some help from akoh, I set up a rather successful breeding colony. I am looking forward to akoh's article on zebra breeding.
This plec is really ideal for our urban lifestyle: low bioload, small sized, lots of character and fun, so cute that even my wife likes them and help to feed when I am away. They are known to even breed in a 2 footer!
Although gone are the days when in season, zebras are easily available, at least they are not extinct and we can enjoy the wonder of breeding this creature. I can still remember the first time when I found tiny little babies, replicas of their parents in the tank, we were so happy, my wife and I were hoping around like kids :D
I hope more bros/sis would consider zebras, as long as they know the basics of plecoing (good filteration, aeration, regular WC), zebras are actually very hardy when keeping a comm tank of zebras only. A pair of zebras is much cheaper in the long term then collecting different and many L numbers and then ibs sell off again. If you take care of them, over time even within a year, the "capital" of the pair could be earned back many times over.
I am still enjoying my zebra comm tremendously and I hope more bros will be attracted by the prettiest L number in Singapore and some say, the world.

One of the main reason why til today we are still getting to enjoy zebras is because of people you like who breeds them and distributes them to all over the world. Otherwise, we will only see pics instead....
so when you starts to draw $$$ from your ATM? :D

Bro
Just like PDR, last time $750 for adult, at Gan's, gave it a miss, now, F1 homebred pup cost $4,000.
zebras are small, low bioload (I think an adult zebra poo is less than one tetra's!) and so beautiful and "iconic" - every magazine/book on plecos almost always have a zebra on the cover:rolleyes:
Bro rather than try this try that, keep all that money and get a pair or maybe 2 males and 1 female, get them at about 3", you have a colony ready to go. Imagine at about 1k, you get 1 xb or 3 showpiece small to mid sized GF? So relative lah, whether expensive or not....
The price is not coming down any time soon...

Bro Titus and Mudskippy
When the time come, feel free to let me know....more than 1 year back akoh helped me with my setup so he is the real guru. I am always very happy to help. Maybe I post some learnings here so that you will know right away that it is actually quite a "no-brainer" especially you guys are old birds in fish keeping in even more challenging breeds.
1. Suggest a at least 3 or 4 footer tank. 2 ft has been done but daily WC will sap your energy.
2. 2 x Eheim Pro 2 to filter tank. One outlet use venturi to increase dissolved oxygen. Also recommended one AC/DC air pump in case of power failure. (akoh and I have standby battery operated ones, which I use for fishing to keep baits alive, at home for same purpose).
3. Bare bottom tank also can, but recommend a thin layer of rounded sand, lapis ok. The male will feel some sense of accomplishment when he tidies up during area cleaning to prepare for his romp.
4. Most important - at least one male and one female of 3" sexually matured and horny. More males better to have competition if possible.
5. Love nests- caves - slates, pvc or ceramic must be provided.
The rest once you join up as members can read akoh's article. So as you can see, the requirements is actually quite basic. In fact after I switched from royals and pseudas to zebras, I feel more relaxed and can enjoy my plecoing hobby more since I travel heavily, and need low bioload and low maintenance plecs. The babies I got is really a great bonus and of course the most important of all - my CO at home loves them and actually encourages and joins me in my hobby.

Anyway, I believe to get more hobbyists into the pleco community, there should be as much free information as possible to disspell all kind of misconception and misunderstanding about these fishes. i mail ordered the caves from the USA in aquabid.com, go check it out.
these are made from regular tile slates.
the dimensions have been mentioned ealier in this thread.
but if you need the dimensions let me know.
i can take them out for some measurements.
its bound with black silicon but clear silicon does the job just as good.
if you have the equipment or someone to cut it for you, better.
let me know too as i have some ideas on an "improved" version.
as least that's what i'd like to think! hahaha

Today, tear down the second tank to catch the clown loach out, this is the second time I had to do it. The first time after removing all wood and caves, could not find in wood or caves or tank. I thought it died and left no bones, reassembled evrything only to see that CL come out from dont know where:mad: Heard that CL can hide in the sand, this time round found it and took it out.
Also took the opportunity to sex the zebras again. Confirmed 2 big males and 1 female, the rest too juvie to sex with confidence. Caught one big fat female from my existing colony and introduced her into the second tank. Now I hope should have some action in a few months time...2 big males and 2 big females....the big alpha already claimed his cave, with a bit of injury to the side of the body, not too serious.
First tank found 5 juvies hiding under a piece of wood. Fingers and toes crossed to have 2 breeding colonies going....:p

if the small fellas turn out to be duds the alpha-female is due sometime 22nd dec.
cycle time for female is between 23 to 26 days from my observation of this female.
any comments on cycle time of yours akoh?

Yesterday ibs, took out a rock and replaced with a DW. When done was going down from the stool, almost fell over... there lying on the floor was a 0.5" baby. Must have **** on the rock and did not let go until too late.
Put it back and it did not swim right....hiaz...hope it will recover. Luckily did not step on it:eek:
gecko,
these guys have a very bad habit of staying on while the "roof is falling".
i had an adult stick to the cave, and silly me didnt peep inside.
fortunately, it struggled out while i was working on the tank.
came back to the bathroom and found it.
this is like 5 minutes later at the minimum.
it was dry and dusty, and croaked when i picked it up... *phew*
dropped it in the tank and it swam like a drunk.
other than a broken portion on the top caudal fin it did recover.
next, i had that happen for a baby and juvenile fish on DW that i took out.
luckily this time i was right in front when they decided to hop off.
after these experiences i'm doubly careful with whatever item i take out of the tank.
also, maybe put the items into a a pail with tank water.
cos you never know how long they will hang on for...

Yes, there is an article in planet catfish with pictures, might not be zebras but a very good visual guide. Also do you notice if these 2 suspect females hang out near the caves rather than hiding inside the caves? That is a good sign too although some females do hide in the caves. So it is really a combination of indicators to determine if you have females....patience, I am sure within 6 months, you will be surprised:)

#2 likes to hide in a cave whereas #5 likes to jump on top of #1's cave or hang out around between #3 and #1s cave.
imo, by size and how healthy the fishes are, #1 is the beta male.. #3 is huge.. but i rarely see any activity from him.. maybe eat until fat fat.. always in his cave.. will take more photos..

I will bet #5 is a female, if she hangs there alot, no male will get so close to another...also #3 most likely a male given the battle scars on the side, males get these when fighting for caves...its really not easy to id a female, its a combination of factors....Congrats, I am almost 100% sure that #5 is a female and being so close, its a matter of time when the male will start to entice her in...

the only LFS that I recall having L46 is NKS @ Hougang Block 211 ...
C328 may have a couple .. but subjective ...
they are not considered seasonal anymore .. cos most of them are breeded ... not wild caught ...
P.S. for better "want to buy" response ... try "buy & sell" section of this forum ...

Sorry to highjack this thread, I am interested in zebras as they look really nice. From the thread I gather that they are also very expensive? Anyone can clue me in on the indicative prices for a juvenille (I will need 6?)
I would like to try breeding a cheaper and possibly easier pleco, but I noticed that there are alot more literature and talk on the zebras. What should I look to then, apart from zebras.

At this point of time, easily above S$350, you can try NKS. At TW, Water World retail at NT10,000 (all sold, i only get to see the left over poos ).

1k for 4 or 5 juveniles depending on size or a breeding pair of adults locally seems reasonable compared to Taiwan or UK. Forget Australia....

Im using a fluval 303 at the moment, flow rate should be abt 900l/hr........ they seem fine with it......... other 2ft tanks run on Tetra 90 which i believe is sufficient. :)

@ barmby,
Thanks!
@ eeeeemo,
Nope.
When they first spawned it was just an eden 501 and 316 for filtration.
The 2028 came later as it was lying around doing zip.
